The objective of the Swedish Cohort Consortium (Cohorts.se) harmonization protocol is to develop harmonized variable definitions common to all Swedish population-based cohorts, in order to allow for more precise research findings and the facilitation of research on rare diseases and exposures, leading to better utilization of study participants’ data, better return of funders’ investments, and a higher benefit to patients and populations.

Information Content
The COHORTS.SE Harmonization Protocol includes participant data on individual-level determinants and outcomes collected by 43 cohort studies. The harmonization protocol includes a total of 101 core variables, generated across 43 study-specific datasets.

- Complete - study-specific variable is the same as DataSchema variable (status detail = identical) or needs transformation to generate DataSchema variable (status detail = compatible)
- Partial - categorical study-specific variable (status detail = proximate) or other types (status detail = tentative) could generate DataSchema variable but with loss of information
- Impossible - study does not collect DataSchema variable (status detail = unavailable) or cannot be used to generate DataSchema variable (status detail = incompatible)
- Undetermined - harmonization status not determined
