The InterGene research program started in 2001 with the examination of a population-based cohort of men and women aged 25-74, to be used as a 4th MONICA-Gothenburg survey. The cohort was re-examined 14 years later and then a new cohort of younger individuals was added, the “Young Heart” study.
The aim was to study the interplay between genetic and environmental determinants of health with emphasis on coronary heart disease.

- Baseline participants that were recruited in 2001 were followed up in 2005-2006 and re-examination in 2014 -2016. After 14 years, a new a new cohort of younger individuals was added, the “Young Heart” study. Swedish disease registries and registry linkage for follow-up of morbidity and mortality has been being updated regularly.

The eligible members of the population-based sample received a postal invitation and information about the study. Questionnaires were filled on the screening day and a supplemental questionnaire on psychosocial factors was sent by mail.

The sample of cases with Coronary heart disease (CHD) is composed by patients between 31 and 75 years old who had specific diagnoses and survived at least 21 days after hospitalization, all discharged from the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Data Collection Event
Socio-demographics, mental health, lifestyle, medical history, reproductive history and hormone use (female only) and dietary habits were assessed through questionnaires.
Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, were taken and lung function were assessed using dry wedge spirometer, and percentages of predicted values of lung function variables (FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC) were calculated.
FENO (Fraction of Exhaled Nitric Oxide) was measured with an online nitric oxide (NO) monitoring system at three exhalation flow rates (50, 100 and 270 ml/s).
Blood and DNA samples were also collected and stored in the biobanks.
Air pollution data were part of the administrative information that were collected from monitoring stations in Gothenburg and the county, and linked to participant profile.
