Västerbotten intervention programme (VIP) is the largest of the three cohorts within Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study (NSHDS).
The cohort is population-based and consists of blood and data from primarily 40, 50 and 60 year olds, collected continuously in this age group in connection with the Västerbotten health surveys from 1985 - present. About half of the individuals have donated blood samples on two or more occasions.

- Inhabitants in Västerbotten county are invited to participate at 40, 50 and 60 years (periodically also at 30 and 70 years at some health centres).
- Supplementary Information
- VIP target the entire county population of 40- 50- and 60-year olds each year. However, there has been fewer invited during the 2020s due to the pandemic and staff shortage. Participation rates have ranged between approximately 50−80 %. The recommended action plan (VIP manual) has been updated regularly according to current national and international guidelines. The questionnaire has gradually expanded, and the food frequency questionnaire has been modified.

The population is composed of men and women at the age of 40, 50, or 60 years (until 1995 also 30 years) and inhabitants of the county of Västerbotten.
