Information was collected about the primary outcomes which concerned fetal or neonatal mortality or serious neonatal morbidity.Neonatal mortality was assessed for the period from 0 to 27 days after birth.

Physical examinations were carried out to determine serious neonatal morbidities. These included birth trauma, Apgar score, coma, stupor or decreased response to pain, seizures on at least two occasions before 72 hours of age, need for assisted ventilation with the use of an endotracheal tube, septicemia, necrotizing enterocolitis defined as intestinal perforation, pneumatosis intestinalis or air in the portal vein diagnosed by means of surgery or radiography, bronchopulmonary dysplasia confirmed by means of radiography, grade III or IV intraventricular hemorrhage and cystic periventricular leukomalacia confirmed by means of ultrasonography.

Blood and cerebrospinal fluid were collected.
