Participants were assessed at either a study center or in their own homes if they were unable to visit the center. The face-to-face assessment comprised a medical history interview and a neuropsychological and medical examination. The medical history interview included questions about vascular diseases and vascular risk factors, cancer, alcohol and caffeine consumption, vitamin deficiency, thyroid disorders, head injury, chronic lung disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, migraines, kidney disease, urinary tract infections, sleep habits, vision and hearing problems, mental health problems including depression and anxiety, subjective cognitive complaints, and current medications. It also included questions about mental activity, physical activity, social activity, dietary questions, and a measure of stable personality traits. Also, each participant's informant completed a phone interview and additional questionnaires as part of the caregiver component of the study. The questionnaires were related to quality of life, disability, sleep, and psychological distress. The comprehensive neuropsychological battery was designed to assess various cognitive domains essential for the diagnosis of dementia and predementia syndromes. It covered attention/processing speed, memory, language, visuo-spatial and executive function, and a computerized test of reaction time. The medical examination comprised blood pressure, height, and weight measures, hip-to-waist ratio, lateral stability test, rigidity, rating of movement, speech, face and tremor, visual acuity, spirometry, grip strength, sit-to-stand test, timed up-and-go test, 6-meter timed walk, smell identification test, and a prospective memory task. Blood was collected. MRI performed.
