The population is composed of residents, staff, and visitors of LTCFs, from where sewage samples tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, and where there were recent or active COVID-19 cases.

Based on the positive SARS-CoV-2 screening, information is collected on the date of collection, any action initiated by public health after the report of the sewage results, any change to outbreak start-date and enddate as related to the SARS-CoV-2 results, number and duration of general COVID-19 outbreaks occurred in other LTCF (without sitespecific sewage surveillance), costs of the sewage sampling, testing, reporting and costs of targeted public health actions. Information on characteristics such as number of residents and category of designated support living, proportion of residents who are diaper-dependent, number of staff, total number of staff working at the site, number of rooms with single accommodation and shared accommodation, private vs non-private providers is collected. Further, information on COVID-19 outbreak history from the start of pandemic January 2020 to the end of the 18-month study. Moreover, information such as time frame, type of vaccine administered and % coverage of the staff and residents in the vaccination roll-out at the LTCF is also collected. COVID-19 screening of residents, staff and visitors was completed.
