The population is composed of HIV-infected adult (aged 18 years old or more) individuals living in Switzerland or having regular visits at a Swiss outpatient clinic or private physician of seven cohort centres (in Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich, and two cantonal hospitals, St Gallen and Ticino).

Information concerning participants' source of income, ability to work, hospitalizations, family situation, household structure, sexual behaviors, alcohol consumption, obstetric event, and medication protocol were collected during a visit to the physician. Information on opportunistic diseases of HIV infection, Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS), diagnosis of cancer, myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes and lipodystrophy, or other clinical events were also collected and reported by the physician. Detailed information was collected concerning antiretroviral treatment: dosage, in case of treatment interruption, the reason for withdrawal, and adherence is also assessed. Information on undergone gynecological examination and performed cervical smears were collected on a gynecological form. Weight, blood pressure as well as waist and hip circumference were measured during the visit. A spectrum of laboratory analysis was collected from blood samples. This included HIV-1 Viral load, leucocyte and lymphocyte counts (CD3, CD4 and CD8 cell counts included), hemoglobin and platelets; cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose and lactate concentrations. The presence of Hepatitis B and C (qualitative and quantitative tests, viral load) and syphilis were screened. ALAT, ASAT, alkaline phosphatase, and creatinine levels were measured and a HIV drug resistance test performed for patients under antiretroviral treatment. Laboratory data were obtained from transfer from hospital databases.
