The population is composed of HIV-infected adult (aged 18 years old or more) individuals living in Switzerland or having regular visits at a Swiss outpatient clinic or private physician of seven cohort centres (in Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich, and two cantonal hospitals, St Gallen and Ticino).

Information concerning participant's ability to work, worked hours, family situation, sexual partnership, medication were collected during a visit to the physician. Information on opportunistic diseases of HIV infection, diagnosis of cancer, myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes and lipodystrophy were also collected and reported by the physician. Weight, blood pressure as well as waist and hip circumference were measured during the visit. A spectrum of laboratory analysis was collected from blood samples. This included HIV-1 Viral load, leucocyte and lymphocyte counts (CD3, CD4 and CD8 cell counts included), hemoglobin and platelets, HIV p24 antigen, HIV p24 antibody; cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose and lactate concentrations. For patients under antiretroviral treatment, ALAT, ASAT, alkaline phosphatase and creatinine levels were measured. Laboratory data were obtained from transfer from hospital databases.
