SAGE - Nested case-control study
Following confirmation of asthma status by a pediatric allergist, different assessments were conducted in children included in the study.
A detailed survey was administered to parents concerning their current and past home environment and information on breastfeeding.
Skin prick tests to common relevant allergens were performed as well as methacholine bronchoprovocation tests.
A blood sample was obtained from children for DNA testing, determination of serum IgE and cortisol, and assessment of immune cell function.
A research technician visited the homes of study children to do a visual inspection for mold, to assess whether the family had instituted allergen avoidance measures, and to collect dust samples from the child’s mattress, the floor of child’s bedroom and the room most commonly used by the child.
Parents were also surveyed with respect to their own respiratory health and they provided mouthwash samples for DNA.
