The Conception cohort consists of women who were in their first trimester of pregnancy and who had a high risk pregnancy (premature labour, history of premature labour, hypertension, gestational diabetes, obesity, intra-uterine infection, systemic or localised infection, underlying inflammatory/immune-mediated diseases or any other condition deemed by the primary care physician to be a high risk factor).

At third trimester of pregnancy and birth, women answered questionnaires about social and physical environment (demographic characteristics of parents, family structure and composition, social policy, socio-economic status, neighbourhood characteristics, social support, non-parental child care, parental behaviour and lifestyle) and interim updates. Also, questions about life events stressors, depression, temperament, physical activity mobility, nutrition and infection diary, pain, medication, clinical and pregnancy histories were asked. They were assessed about birth (gestation and route) and neonatal history.

Weight, height, waist circumference and blood pressure were measured. Body mass index was calculated. Fetal fat and placental imaging were done by ultrasounds.

Blood, hair, saliva, cord blood, umbilical cord and placenta were collected.
