The High Risk Birth cohort consists of women who were in their last trimester of pregnancy at the time of recruitment and who had a high risk pregnancy (premature labour, history of premature labour, hypertension, gestational diabetes, obesity, intra-uterine infection, systemic or localised infection, underlying inflammatory/immune-mediated diseases or any other condition deemed by the primary care physician to be a high risk factor).

At third trimester and birth, women answered questionnaires about demographic profile, social and physical environment (demographic characteristics of parents, family structure and composition, socio-economic status, neighbourhood characteristics, social support, non-parental child care, parental behaviour and lifestyle). They were assessed about medication history, birth history (gestation, labor, delivery and route), neonatal history, and their high risk condition (diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, history of infections, history of premature labor/delivery or indication of premature labor/delivery or underlying medical conditions).

Weight, height, waist circumference and blood pressure were measured. A physical exam was performed. Body mass index was calculated.

Blood, hair, saliva, cord blood, umbilical cord and placenta were collected.
