The population is composed of inhabitants of Uppsala, Sweden aged 50.

Self-reported history of diseases and medication, as well as lifestyle behaviors (exercise, smoking, alcohol intake), education, social network, number of teeth etc. were collected through questionnaires. Food intake was also assessed using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). A number of tests evaluating endothelial function, arterial compliance, atherosclerosis, myocardial geometry and function and heart rate variability were performed together with a 24h ambulatory blood pressure recording. Regarding energy and metabolism, basal energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry; maximum rate of oxygen consumption (maximal VO2) was evaluated by a maximal bicycle test; physical activity was evaluated by an accelerometer. Anthropometrical measurements were taken by bioimpedance, abdominal fat by MRI scan; and bone mineralization, fat mass and lean mass by DXA - scanning. Sleep apnea was diagnosed from an overnight sleep registration using the Watch-Path device. A number of serum/plasma samples were collected and an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed. Urine samples were collected.
