Household screening interviews were conducted to select the NLSY79 civilian cross-sectional sample from the civilian population. Approximately 18,000 of the screening interviews were carried out among 918 sample segments in 102 Primary Sampling Units (PSUs), which were selected from the NORC Master Probability Sample of the United States.

Data Collection Event

NLSY79 1991 Interview

Some participants received a computer-assisted personal interview, while others were interviewed with paper-and-pencil. 13.8% of interviews were collected by telephone. Only a sub-sample of 201 respondents from the NLSY79 Military Sample was interviewed. Economically disadvantaged, non-Black/non-Hispanic members of the supplemental sample were no longer interviewed.
