The population is composed of registered nurses, aged 30 to 55 years and married at the time of recruitment in 1976 living in California, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Information on standard reproductive risk factors for cancer and cardiovascular diseases, history of benign diseases, family history of cancer, oral contraceptives, postmenopausal hormones, history of hair-dye use and cigarette smoking, age, parity, diet (food frequency questionnaire), physical activity, quality of life, work-related stress, caregiving outside of work, retirement and other measures of social support or social networks are assessed through questionnaires. Weight information is also collected. Information on cancer, myocardial infarction or stroke and participants deaths are collected through health databases.
