Institutionalized individuals were included in the study by proportion, because in the study area residential homes were over-represented and nursing homes were underrepresented.

Participants were identified by systematic random sampling from an age-ordered list provided by the official registry office for each of the seven sub-districts. Institutionalized individuals were included in the study by proportion. Sixty residential home residents and 132 nursing home residents were identified by systematic random sampling from an age-ordered list provided by the four institutions in the study area.

A fully structured face to face interview collected information on socio-demographics, education, marital status, comorbidities, familial history of dementia, alcohol consumption, smoking, cognitive functions (Structured Interview for Diagnosis of Dementia of Alzheimer Type, Multiinfarct Dementia and Dementia of other Aetiology according to ICD-10 and DSM-III-R - SIDAM, which includes all 30 items of the Mini-Mental State Examination - MMSE as well as the assessment of activities of daily living - SIDAM-ADL scale; Clinical Dementia Rating Scale - CDR; subjective memory impairment - SMI; Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale - CES-D, instrumental ADLs - IADLs; social network was assessed with the German version of the Practitioner Assessment of Network Type instrument - PANT; loss experience was measured using the Leipziger Lebensereignis-Liste - LLL), and physical measures (blood pressure). Dates of death of participants were obtained from structured proxy interviews or from the official registry office.
