The population is composed of non-institutionalized males and females aged 65 to 70 in 2009 (birth year 1939 to 1943) .

A self-completed questionnaire covered specific life course characteristics such as life history from childhood, through adulthood and until the time of completing the questionnaire (i.e. 65 to 70 years). Sections were structured in chronological order to enhance recall, and included indications of socioeconomic status and health and functional status, as well as of the use of health services. In-person visits were performed at the study centre, and included physical and cognitive performance tests as well as a set of anthropometric and cardiovascular indices. Frailty was assessed according to the five characteristics (shrinking, weakness, exhaustion, slowness and low activity) included in the frailty phenotype. Cognitive function was assessed using the mini-mental state examination; clock drawing test; verbal fluency; and the trail making test A and B . File linkage with death certificates, possibly with hospital discharge records if feasible were completed until death or refusal.
