A sub-sample of the Scottish Mental Survey 1947. The mean age of the participants was 70 years old at wave 1, 73 years old at wave 2 and 76 years old at wave 3.

Cognitive ability: Moray House Test and psychometric battery consisting of executive function, reasoning, memory, and processing speed.

Socio-demographic information: education, occupation, marital status/living arrangement.

History of disease and medication use, anxiety and depression, smoking and alcohol status.

Physical and fitness measures: disability scale, height, weight, blood pressure, lung function, grip strength, 6-m walk time, visual acuity.

Blood samples taken for DNA extraction, biochemistry and haematology.

Self-reported parental background, education and occupation, children's education and occupation, wellbeing, social networks and support, activities, personality and diet.
