The study population consists of residents of the town of Hisayama aged 40 years and older.

The participants received full check-ups on their health status and neurological condition.

When new neurological symptoms were suspected, study team physicians evaluated the participant, and an effort was made to obtain further diagnostic information.

Each participant also completed a self-administered questionnaire covering medical history, treatments for hypertension and diabetes, smoking status, alcohol intake and leisure-time physical activity.

Resting blood pressure, height and weight were measured and body mass index was calculated. Participants underwent an electrocardiogram to detect abnormalities.

Blood was also collected.
