The study population consists of residents of the town of Hisayama aged 40 years and older.

Health check-ups were repeated annually. Vital and health status were checked annually by mail or telephone for any participants who did not undergo regular examination or who moved out of town.

In addition, information regarding new cardiovascular events, including stroke, was collected through a daily monitoring system established by the study team physicians, local practitioners and staff of the division of Health and Welfare of the town.

When a participant died, all medical information related to his illness and death, including hospital charts, physician's records and death certificate, were collected. Moreover, autopsy was performed at the Kyushu University Department of Pathology, provided that consent for autopsy had been obtained.
