The popluation consists of men and women aged 65 years and over; residents from the city of Larissa in the province of Thessaly, and from Marousi, a suburban city of Athens, Greece.

Certified neurologists, trained neuropsychologists and dieticians administered structured questionnaires in face-to-face interviews and conducted neuropsychological assessments of participants.

Questionnaires collected socio-demographic information including a detailed medical and family history. The study participants were interviewed regarding their involvement in common leisure time activities including social, mental, and physical ones. Change in performance of daily activities and self-care habits that require physical capacity and cognitive functioning were recorded. The participants were also queried in detail about their basic physical abilities and about quantitative and qualitative features of sleep during the last month. Dietary intake was evaluated through a semi-qualitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) developed and validated for the Greek population.

The participants were screened for neuro-psychiatric conditions including depression, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms. In addition, neurologists carried out a complete and structured neurological evaluation and trained psychometricians administered a complete battery of neuropsychological test assessing all major cognitive domains.

Physical strength of the upper extremities was estimated using a handgrip electronic dynamometer.

Nonfasting blood samples were collected.
