Study participants were born between April 1st 1972 and March 30 1973 at the Queen Mary Maternity Centre in Dunedin who were still living in the greater Dunedin metropolitan area three years later.

During this assessment phase, participants went to the Dunedin Research Unit for a one-day assessment.

Information was collected about the participant’s general health, mobility, life events (marriages, education, work history, residences), and work and finances. Also, information on the participant’s self-reports of illegal and norm-violating behaviors, and social relationships (partner relationships, social support, childhood trauma) was obtained. Respiratory health, dental health, sexual behavior and reproductive health information was also obtained.

Data was collected from a cognitive assessment that was conducted to measure intelligence and cognitive ability.

In addition, blood pressure, height and weight were measured. Tests were performed to assess fitness, taste, endothelial function, cardio-respiratory fitness and retinal function.
