At recruitment, participants completed detailed self-administered dietary and lifestyle questionnaires. The lifestyle questionnaire sought data on factors such as sociodemographic characteristics, personal medical history, history of cigarette smoking, physical activity, height, weight and body mass index, and additionally, for women, information on menstrual and reproductive history, and use of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. The dietary questionnaire was a quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) that addressed usual dietary habits over the previous year.

Participants were asked to measure their hip and waist circumferences.

Participants also provided clippings from each toenail and several strands of hair, including the hair roots.
