- After the baseline investigation, participants were followed-up by record linkage to Canadian national and provincial registries to assess cancer incidence and death. Follow-up was continued through 31 December 2010 for participants who were resident in Ontario and through 31 December 2005 for participants residing in all other provinces.

The majority of the study participants were recruited through the alumni associations of the universities of Alberta, Toronto, and Western Ontario. A small contingent was also recruited through the Canadian Cancer Society.
