The population is composed of spouses of the probands who are psychiatric patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder, are predominantly of European descent, and are Lausanne inhabitants aged 35 to 75 years.

Supplementary Information

During the psychiatric baseline evaluation of the participants (probands) of the metabolic cohort 2010-2014, participants were systematically asked whether they would allow the study to contact their spouses. The spouse was then invited by letter to participate. Those who agreed were contacted by a psychologist by phone, who provided further information on the study and sent them the detailed information letter and consent forms. In parallel to the first follow-up of the original cohort (probands), psychiatric patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder, enrolled in a study on metabolic complications under psychotropic drug treatment and in the age range of the original cohort (probands), were systematically contacted by letter and phone to ask whether they would be willing to participate. After completion of the psychiatric evaluation, participants were contacted by the somatic team by letters and phone calls to elicit consent also for the physical part.

A semi-structured diagnostic interview and a number of self-rating instruments evaluating personality traits, attitudes, and functioning were assessed. Diagnostic information was collected using the Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies (DIGS). Additional data was collected based on interview techniques, including headache symptoms (Diagnostic Interview for Headache Syndromes (DIHS)) and life events (F. Amiel-Lebigre interview). Complementary information about somatization, obsessions, sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobia, paranoid traits, psychotics traits, and other symptoms, negative affectivity and social inhibition, hypomanic symptoms, social support, quality of life, and personality was collected using a self-report battery including the following instruments: The Symptom Check List 90 Revised (SCL-90 R), The DS14 (Type D Personality), the Hypomania Checklist-32 first revised version (HCL-32-R1), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life (MANSA), and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI-R) - revised. Cognitive function was assessed using the Do 80 (Epreuve de dénomination orale d’images) Cognitive Complaint Questionnaire, the Grober and the Buschke episodic memory test CERAD praxis items, the Lexical semantic fluency tasks, the Stroop color test, and the Severity staging based on the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR). A saliva sample was collected.
