The population is composed of spouses of the probands who are psychiatric patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder, are predominantly of European descent, and are Lausanne inhabitants aged 35 to 75 years.

During the psychiatric baseline evaluation of the participants (probands) of the metabolic cohort 2010-2014, participants were systematically asked whether they would allow the study to contact their spouses. The spouse was then invited by letter to participate. Those who agreed were contacted by a psychologist by phone, who provided further information on the study and sent them the detailed information letter and consent forms. In parallel to the first follow-up of the original cohort (probands), psychiatric patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder, enrolled in a study on metabolic complications under psychotropic drug treatment and in the age range of the original cohort (probands), were systematically contacted by letter and phone to ask whether they would be willing to participate. After completion of the psychiatric evaluation, participants were contacted by the somatic team by letters and phone calls to elicit consent also for the physical part.

Information on demographic data, socioeconomic status, lifestyle behaviors (smoking, alcohol intake), health service utilization, personal history of diseases (diabetes, stroke, myocardial infarction, and coronary procedures or surgery), prescribed and over-the-counter medication, and familial history of cardiovascular risk factors is collected through interviews. Gender identity and related information such as gender norms, gender relations, and gender-related traits are assessed through the Gender Questionnaire. Health economic data are assessed through questionnaires. Self-rating questionnaires were used to screen for some lifestyle factors such as diet using the Questionnaire alimentaire Bus Santé, level of daytime sleepiness using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), obstructive sleep apnea using the STOP-BANGquestionnaire, narcolepsy using the Ullanlinna Narcolepsy Scale (UNS), sleep apneas using the Berlin questionnaire, circadian typology using the Circadian typology questionnaire, sleep quality, and disorders using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI); restless legs syndromes using the Restless LegSyndrome (RLS) screening questionnaire, parasomnias using the Munich Parasomnia Screening (MUPS), presence of pain using the Persistent pain and theTnsSofres questionnaire, depression using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and fatigue using the Chalder fatigue scale and the Krupp fatigue severity scale. Information on COVID-19 exposure of participants and their relatives to SARS-CoV-2, timing of infections, length of symptoms, severity of the disease, number of tests by RT-PCR or serology, hospital admission, isolation and quarantine, and vaccination status is collected. Screen for cognitive disorders is done during the interview using the Mini-Mental State Evaluation (MMSE) in subjects who are older than 65 years. Body weight and height, waist and hip circumference, blood pressure, heart rate, percentage of fat, and handgrip are measured. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart rate variability measures are performed. Physical activity level is measured through a wrist-worn accelerometer. Pulmonary function (PneumoLaus), polysomnography (HypnoLaus), bone densitometry in women (OsteoLaus), and ophthalmological exams (OphthalmoLaus) were performed in additional assessment modules. Blood, urine, and saliva samples are collected.
