The population is composed of adult first-degree relatives (biological parents and siblings) of the probands.

Information on demographic data, socioeconomic status, lifestyle behaviors (smoking, alcohol intake, sleep, diet, and physical activity), personal history of diseases (diabetes, stroke, myocardial infarction, and coronary procedures or surgery), medication, and familial history of cardiovascular risk factors was collected through an interview. Data regarding reproductive and obstetrical history, oral contraception, and hormonal replacement therapy was collected for women. Screening for cognitive disorders was done during an interview using the Mini-Mental State Evaluation (MMSE) in subjects who were older than 65 years. Information about the presence or absence of psychiatric disorders (the 12-item General Health Questionnaire) was also collected. Body weight and height, waist and hip circumference, blood pressure, heart rate, fat and fat-free mass assessed by electrical bioimpedance, and handgrip were measured. Pulmonary function (PneumoLaus), polysomnography (HypnoLaus), bone densitometry in women (OsteoLaus), and ophthalmological exams (OphthalmoLaus) were performed in additional assessment modules. Biochemical and genetic evaluations of cardiovascular risk factors were performed. Blood and urine samples were collected.
