CCHS population

The population is composed of individuals 12 years of age and older who live in one of the ten provinces and the three territorial capitals of Canada.

Participants are excluded if they are: living on reserves and other Aboriginal settlements in the provinces; full-time members of the Canadian Forces; institutionalized, or living in foster care (for children aged 12-17); or living in the Quebec health regions of Région du Nunavik and Région des Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James.

Supplementary Information

Three methods (sampling frames) are used to generate survey participants: an area frame, a list frame, and random digit dialing. The area frame consists of a selection of dwellings drawn from Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey sampling frame. The list frame consists of a list of telephone numbers from the Canada Phone Directory. Lastly, in four health regions, the sample is supplemented with random digit dialing. Moreover, for the 12 to 17-year-old participants, the frame is constructed from the Canadian Child Benefit (CCB). For the participants 18 years old and older, it is constructed from the Dwelling Universe File (DUF).

Administrative, socio-demographic (age, income, labour force, education), lifestyle (alcohol use, physical activities and smoking), chronic conditions, flu shots, general health, primary health care, height and weight, maternal experiences, home care services, food insecurity, pain reliever medication use and perceived need for mental health care information was collected.
