The central objective of this survey is to gather health-related data at the sub-provincial levels of geography (health region or combined health regions) in Canada.
The main objectives are to:
* Support health surveillance programs by providing health data at the national, provincial and intra-provincial levels;
* Provide a single data source for health research on small populations and rare characteristics;
* Timely release of information that is easily accessible to a diverse community of users; and
* Create a flexible survey instrument that includes a rapid response option to address emerging issues related to the health of the population.

- A sample of approximately 136,000 respondents were interviewed during the reference periods of 2001, 2003 and 2005. The sample size was changed to 65,000 respondents each year starting in 2007.

The population is composed of individuals 12 years of age and older who live in one of the ten provinces and the three territorial capitals of Canada.

- Participants are excluded if they are: living on reserves and other Aboriginal settlements in the provinces; full-time members of the Canadian Forces; institutionalized, or living in foster care (for children aged 12-17); or living in the Quebec health regions of Région du Nunavik and Région des Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James.

Three methods (sampling frames) are used to generate survey participants: an area frame, a list frame, and random digit dialing. The area frame consists of a selection of dwellings drawn from Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey sampling frame. The list frame consists of a list of telephone numbers from the Canada Phone Directory. Lastly, in four health regions, the sample is supplemented with random digit dialing. Moreover, for the 12 to 17-year-old participants, the frame is constructed from the Canadian Child Benefit (CCB). For the participants 18 years old and older, it is constructed from the Dwelling Universe File (DUF).
