The population is composed of patients who receive care for symptomatic and severe COVID-19, and were inadequately evaluated in or excluded from phase 3 vaccine effectiveness (VE) trials in any of the 50 participating emergency departments (EDs) across 8 provinces ( Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan).

Information was collected about vaccination status through a telephone call. Patient records and abstract data about demographics, history, risk factors, co-morbid conditions, medication use, physical examination findings, treatment, procedures, and outcomes from the pre-hospital, emergency department and in-hospital record were reviewed. Prospective data collection to capture important clinical variables often not found in medical records or administrative data is done when possible.
