The population is composed of 18 to 75 years old health care workers from acute care, rehabilitation, and complex care hospitals in Canada.

Inclusion:
Occupation full- or part-time (>20 hours per week for health care workers, ≥ 8 hours per week for physician, nurse practitioner or midwife);
Have convenient access to and basic skills for use of computer or cell phone with internet capability;
Able to read and write English or French and available for follow-up during the study period.

Exclusion: HCWs are not eligible if they plan to take leave from work for more than two consecutive weeks within the first 3 months of enrolment (e.g., vacation, maternity or medical leave, retirement).

a) sending email “blasts” to hospital employees,
b) providing short videoconference or phone presentations for team meetings/huddles,
c) posting electronic advertisements on internal hospital communications,
d) displaying physical posters in staff work areas,
e) advertising on social media platforms (e.g., Twitter or Facebook), and
f) distributing pamphlets to targeted internal mailboxes.

Data Collection Event

CCCS - Longitudinal Follow-up

Information regarding symptoms of respiratory illnesses and reception of the influenza vaccine (in December) was collected from a weekly report. Additional information about symptoms of respiratory illness as well as exposure to ill household members, patients, and other social contacts and the use of protective measures in the previous 14 days was collected on the ‘extended’ weekly report. Upon completion of the weekly report, those who indicate any of: fever, cough, or shortness of breath, was required to complete an illness report until the symptoms disappear.
