The population consists of all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon, in the South West of England, with an expected date of delivery between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

ALSPAC attempted to make contact with eligible women through media information encouraging study contact and recruitment staff visiting community locations. In parallel, routine antenatal and maternity health services were used to promote the study and distribute an ‘expression of interest’ card. Through returning this card, women were able to request further information on the study or to decline participation. Completed cards contained sufficient detail to allow ALSPAC staff to determine eligibility.

Posters were printed for display in a variety of different places - including chemist shops, libraries, mother and toddler groups, and pre-school playgroups, general practitioner waiting-rooms, antenatal clinics and any other area where a mother in early pregnancy was likely to be. In addition, there was considerable local and national coverage in the press, radio and television.

Data Collection Event

ALSPAC - Mothers - 8 weeks

Using a questionnaire information was collected about feelings, amount of sleep, and reaction to the actual birth of baby. In addition, information was collected about general physical health, obstetric health, mental health, diet and nutrition, social characteristics, environmental characteristics, substance use, parenting. Current health and symptoms, infections, bladder problems, sleep, medications and dietary supplements, caffeine intake, hospital admissions, a dentist visit, contraceptive use, delivery, and the location of the birth information was collected. Anthropometry was self-reported. Social characteristics information such as occupation and social support, as well as smoking (participant and partner) and information about illicit drug use habits was collected as well as parenting information including feelings during labour/delivery, antenatal classes and childcare plans.

Amongst mental health measures, depression, anxiety and life events were assessed.

Very detailed prenatal, labour and early postnatal data were extracted from the obstetric medical records.

Participants who provided permission were linked to the National Health Service (NHS) Central Register, which provides data on death (including underlying and contributing causes and date), cancer (including type, site and date of registration (approximate date of diagnosis)) and emigration (out of the UK).
