The population consists of all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon, in the South West of England, with an expected date of delivery between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

ALSPAC attempted to make contact with eligible women through media information encouraging study contact and recruitment staff visiting community locations. In parallel, routine antenatal and maternity health services were used to promote the study and distribute an ‘expression of interest’ card. Through returning this card, women were able to request further information on the study or to decline participation. Completed cards contained sufficient detail to allow ALSPAC staff to determine eligibility.

Posters were printed for display in a variety of different places - including chemist shops, libraries, mother and toddler groups, and pre-school playgroups, general practitioner waiting-rooms, antenatal clinics and any other area where a mother in early pregnancy was likely to be. In addition, there was considerable local and national coverage in the press, radio and television.

Data Collection Event

ALSPAC - Mothers - 8 to 42 weeks gestation

Information was collected through the use of questionnaires, and registries. Using a questionnaire, information was collected about environment; where participant lives and works, and about what they do. In addition, information was collected about general physical health, social characteristics, housing and neighborhood characteristics, environmental characteristics, substance use, congenital malformations, marital status and presence of partner, household composition, social support, housing, neighborhood, environmental exposures, cigarette smoking, and alcohol intake.

Weight and blood pressure were measured.

Participants who provided permission were linked to the National Health Service (NHS) Central Register, which provides data on death (including underlying and contributing causes and date), cancer (including type, site and date of registration (approximate date of diagnosis)) and emigration (out of the UK).

Data were abstracted from routine antenatal medical records (i.e. they are not measurements conducted specifically for research). Data were only abstracted for women who had indicated at recruitment that they were happy for the medical records to be obtained. Information was collected about gestational age, hypertensive disorder, pre-eclampsia, gestational hypertension, diabetes during pregnancy, anaemia, proteinuria, blood pressure, weight (absolute, average and change in pregnancy), oedema, weight of placenta, glycosuria and haemoglobin.
