The population consists of all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon, in the South West of England, with an expected date of delivery between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

ALSPAC attempted to make contact with eligible women through media information encouraging study contact and recruitment staff visiting community locations. In parallel, routine antenatal and maternity health services were used to promote the study and distribute an ‘expression of interest’ card. Through returning this card, women were able to request further information on the study or to decline participation. Completed cards contained sufficient detail to allow ALSPAC staff to determine eligibility.

Posters were printed for display in a variety of different places - including chemist shops, libraries, mother and toddler groups, and pre-school playgroups, general practitioner waiting-rooms, antenatal clinics and any other area where a mother in early pregnancy was likely to be. In addition, there was considerable local and national coverage in the press, radio and television.

Data Collection Event

ALSPAC - Mothers - 33 months

Information was collected through the use of questionnaires, and registries. Questionnaire collected information about parents' problems. In addition, information was collected about general physical health, obstetric health, mental health, diet and nutrition, social characteristics, partner information, housing and neighborhood characteristics, environmental characteristics, substance use, and parenting. Current health and symptoms, bladder problems, medications and dietary supplements, hospital admissions, contact with health services, as well as attitude toward health services, schooling, and work, dentist visit and physical activity, contraceptive use, menstruation, and other pregnancies information was collected. Social characteristics information such as occupation (participant and partner), marital status, household income, financial difficulties, household composition, biological father involvement, childhood and Illicit drug use habits, parenting information such as parents’ feelings towards child and parenting skills information was collected. Partner’s information on health, alcohol intake (participant and partner), smoking habits (participant and partner), aggression and affection levels, and relationship quality was collected as well as housing and neighbourhood information.

Amongst mental health measures depression, anxiety and life events were assessed.

Participants who provided permission were linked to the National Health Service (NHS) Central Register, which provides data on death (including underlying and contributing causes and date), cancer (including type, site and date of registration (approximate date of diagnosis) and emigration (out of the UK).
