The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

At the focus clinic, health, literacy/numeracy, motor skills, physiological and social information was assessed.

Information was collected about food and activity, nutrition, general health and interview with accompanying adult.

Reading abilities, and coordination were assessed.

A skin prick test was conducted and anthropometry, hearing, , vision and blood pressure and pulse rate were measured.

A blood sample was collected.
