The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

At the “children in focus” clinic, cognitive, environmental, parenting, physical and seeing, hearing and speaking measures were taken.

Information on diet and parenting was collected.

Speech and language and short-term memory were assessed.

Anthropometry, blood pressure and pulse rate, dental observations, lung function and fitness were measured. A tympanometry and hearing test and allergy test were done as well.

A blood sample was collected.
