The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

At the “children in focus” clinic, cognitive, physical and seeing, hearing and speaking measures were taken.

Cognitive development was assessed.

Anthropometry measures, blood pressure and pulse rate, were measured. Dental observations, observations of skin, hair and eyes were made and a tympanometry and hearing assessment.
