The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

At the “children in focus” clinic, physical and seeing, hearing and speaking measures were taken.

Information about eye colour was collected.

Anthropometry measures were taken. A tympanometry and hearing test and external eye inspection and cover tests, were done and eye movements, motor fusion, stereopsis, visual acuity, and photorefraction were measured as well.

A blood sample was collected.
