The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

At the “children in focus” clinic, day care, environmental, physical and seeing, hearing and speaking measures were taken.

Information was collected about day care diet vision history and eye colour.

Speech and language were assessed.

Anthropometry measures were taken. A tympanometry and hearing test and external eye inspection, cover tests were done and eye movements, motor fusion, stereopsis, visual acuity, and photorefraction were measured as well.
