The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

At the “children in focus” clinic, cognitive, day care, environmental, physical and seeing, hearing and speaking measures were taken.

Information was collected about day care, diet, eye colour, vision history.

Cognitive development was assessed.

Anthropometry measures were taken, a tympanometry and hearing test, external eye inspection were done. Eye movements, cover tests, motor fusion, stereopsis, visual acuity, and photorefraction were measured as well.

A blood sample was collected.
