The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

At the “children in focus” clinic, environmental, parenting, physical and seeing, hearing and speaking measures were taken.

Information was collected about vision history, external eye inspection, and eye colour.

Anthropometry, tympanometry and hearing, eye movements, cover tests, motor fusion, stereopsis, visual acuity, photorefraction and air pollution were measured .

A blood sample was collected.
