The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

Information was collected through the use of questionnaires, and registries.

Some questions were child based and some were child completed.

Questionnaires specifically collected information about health and behaviour from mother and information about the way time’s spent, school attendance, life events, psychosis-like symptoms, locus of control, self-image, alcohol use, smoking, drug use, asthma and allergies and eating disorders, sensation seeking, deliberate self-harm, transport use and accidents and employment and occupation from child study. Information was collected about physical health, mental and cognitive issues, social characteristics, parenting, childcare and schooling, employment, substance use, activities and other characteristics. Information about allergies, eczema and asthma, diarrhea or gastrointestinal problems, fatigue and accidents was collected. Employment information such as current job status and job title, pocket money and transport use was collected as well. Anthropometry measures were collected in a self-reported manner. Social information about friendships, romantic relations, parenting information such as discipline and disagreements, and childcare and schooling information such as parental aspirations for school/career was collected as well as information about child’s attendance to school, alcohol, cigarettes and drug consumption, activities such as out of school activities, activities with adults, parental monitoring, and computer/internet use were assessed as well as general activities.

Amongst mental and cognitive issues information about temper tantrums/rages, antisocial activities, social cognition, mood and feelings, body image, eating disorders and self harm was collected. Child’s psychosis-like symptoms, locus of control, moods and feelings, life events, sensation- seeking and deliberate self-harm were assessed as well.

Children have been linked to the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) database, Pupil Level Annual School Census (PLASC), Annual School Census (ASC) and National and the Pupil Database (NPD).

Participants were linked to residential addresses across the life course. Linkages could be established to co-ordinates or health, political and administrative geographies. Participants could also be linked to neighbourhood data.
