The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

Information was collected through the use of questionnaires, and registries.

Some questions were child based and some were child completed. Questionnaires collected information about the children from mothers about advancement at school and plans for the next few years. Information about feelings towards school, school experiences and activities, importance of GCSE’s, whether they like and are good at the core subjects, home-school link, aspirations for the future, confidence and dealing with certain situations was collected directly from the child study. Information was collected about the standard of education and pupil behaviour at the child’s school, involvement in child’s education, homework and how much help is given to the child and what the carer would like the child to do after they turn 16, parental school involvement, type of school attended, school enjoyment, computer use, travel to school, aspiration for grades and further education, attitudes toward learning, attendance and clubs/activities. Information about weekend activities was also collected.

Children have been linked to the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) database, Pupil Level Annual School Census (PLASC), Annual School Census (ASC) and National and the Pupil Database (NPD).

Participants were linked to residential addresses across the life course. Linkages could be established to co-ordinates or health, political and administrative geographies. Participants could also be linked to neighbourhood data.
