The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

Information was collected through the use of questionnaires, and registries.

Some questions were child based and some were child completed. Questionnaires specifically collected information about child’s health and behavior from mother and information about self-image, parental relationships, preferences and performance at school, hand, foot and eye preferences from child study. Information was collected about physical health, mental and cognitive issues, diet and nutrition, environmental characteristics, social characteristics, parenting, childcare and schooling, substance use, and activities. Information about immunisations, bed wetting/ bladder problems, sleeping and tics/twitches, diet and nutrition information including food frequency, feeding difficulties, eating behaviours, school packed lunch and dietary supplements was collected as well as social information from siblings, religion friendships and sleeping environment including bed sharing, parenting information such as a parenting measure, discipline, own space, and child’s relationship with parents, childcare and schooling information such as who, where and when children are cared for, type of school, transport to school, school enjoyment, favorite subjects, behaviour /emotions after school, educational problems, disciplinary problems, parental aspirations for school/career, and child’s school ability. Information about alcohol, cigarettes and drug consumption, activities such as out of school activities, favorite activities, help in the home, activities with adults, activities with siblings and toy use was also collected. Anthropometry measures were collected in a reported manner. Environmental exposures were also included in the information collected such as sleeping environment.

Amongst mental and cognitive issues information about language/vocabulary, communication, laterality, strengths and difficulties and mood and feelings was collected. Opinions on social difficulties and self-image were also assessed.

Children have been linked to the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) database, Pupil Level Annual School Census (PLASC), Annual School Census (ASC) and National and the Pupil Database (NPD).

Participants were linked to residential addresses across the lifecourse. Linkages could be established to co-ordinates or health, political and administrative geographies. Participants could also be linked to neighbourhood data.
