The population consists of any resulting child from all pregnant women residents in the old administrative county of Avon if their estimated delivery date fell between 1 April 1991 and 31 December 1992.

Information was collected through the use of questionnaires, and registries.

Some questions were child based and some were child completed. Questionnaires specifically collected information about child’s health and behavior from mother and about the other children in their class, computer usage, and favorite things from the child. Information was collected about physical health, mental and cognitive issues, diet and nutrition, environmental characteristics, social characteristics, parenting, childcare and schooling, education, substance use, and activities. Information about current health and symptoms, doctor visits, hospital admissions, surgical procedures, accidents and injuries, medications, allergies, eczema and asthma, diarrhea or gastrointestinal problems, convulsions or seizures, infections, time off school due to ill health, hearing, vision, speech, growth problems, other health problems, teeth/dental problems, sunburn, diet and nutrition information including food frequency, feeding difficulties, eating behaviours, school packed lunch, and special diet was collected. Anthropometry measures were collected in a self-reported manner. Environmental exposures information such as exposure to sunlight was also collected. Social information about siblings, parenting information, and information about own space, childcare and schooling information such as who, where and when children are cared for, type of school, transport to school, school enjoyment, behaviour /emotions after school, child’s enjoyment, difficulties, behaviour and ability at school as well as bullying, was collected, as well as information about alcohol consumption, out of school activities, indoor/outdoor activities help in the home and activities with siblings were assessed as well as computer, game consoles and internet use.

Amongst mental and cognitive issues, information about life events was collected.

Children have been linked to the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) database, Pupil Level Annual School Census (PLASC), Annual School Census (ASC), National and the Pupil Database (NPD).

Participants were linked to residential addresses across the life course. Linkages could be established to co-ordinates or health, political and administrative geographies. Participants could also be linked to neighbourhood data.
