The U-age sheltered housing study (TryBo) aims to compare characteristics and health outcomes between sheltered housing for older people (trygghetsboende) and aging in place.
The specific study aims are:
- To explore the characteristics and health status of older people living in sheltered housing compared to those aging in place.
- To explore to what extent the type of residence (sheltered housing or aging in place) contributes to thriving and well-being.
- To illuminate aspects of sheltered housing that are facilitators and/or barriers to thriving, as described by residents.
- To describe the longitudinal trajectories and relocation patterns of residents living in sheltered housing.

The population is composed of individuals who are 70 years or older and residing independently in their own homes (ageing in place) in Sweden. Participants are selected to match the Sheltered Housing group.

Data Collection Event
Information is collected about age, sex, living with partner status, relationship status, participation in physical and social activities, place of birth, functional status (Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living, Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, combined ADL/IADL), quality of life (EuroQol five dimensions questionnaire, the ICEpop CAPability Measure for Older People), thriving in long-term care facilities (Thriving of Older People Assessment Scale), and depressive mood (Geriatric Depression Rating Scale).
The Swedish Patient Registry is used to extract details of participants’ healthcare consumption in terms of the number and place of health visits and the diagnoses and length of stay associated with these visits. The Registry on Social Services for Older People and Persons with Disabilities is used to obtain information about participants’ aged care consumption. The Swedish Prescribed Drugs Register is used to extract participants’ pharmacology consumption, such as the number of prescriptions, anatomical therapeutic chemical codes, and total cost for pharmacy.
