The objective of the shAIRe Qualitative Harmonization Initiative is to evaluate the harmonization potential across Canadian respiratory health cohorts within the shAIRe network in order to explore shared respiratory outcomes, risk factors, and determinants of lung health across the life course.
The initiative coordinates the qualitative harmonization of data collected by 12 participating studies, organized into three target populations: adults (18 years and older), adolescents (12 to 17 years), and children (under 12 years). For each population, a list of core variables (the DataSchema) is defined, and the potential to generate each DataSchema variable from the study-specific data collected is evaluated for every participating study.
The harmonized domains span sociodemographic characteristics, residential and environmental exposures, respiratory conditions and comorbidities, lung function measures, anthropometric and birth measures, and lifestyle behaviours including tobacco and e-cigarette use. By documenting the harmonization potential across cohorts, the initiative supports the future co-analysis of respiratory health determinants and outcomes throughout the life course.
