Participants were followed annually by postal questionnaire to obtain medication and fracture history. Details regarding reported fractures were obtained through a telephone interview. The data collection at Year 3 (participants aged 40-60 years), Year 5 (all participants), Year 10 (all participants) and Year 16 (women aged 60-75 years) follow-ups included an extensive interviewer-administered questionnaire and a clinical assessment (bone mineral density, X-rays, ultrasounds, height and weight measurements). Participants not selected to do a full interview at Year 3 and 16 follow-ups, received a short postal follow-up questionnaire on fractures.

The Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos) is an ongoing population-based longitudinal study of community-dwelling adults (ages 25 years and older) recruited from 1995 to 1997. Between 2004 and 2006, a cohort of young women and men 16-24 years old was also recruited. Both cohorts have been drawn from a random population-based sample of non-institutionalized men and women living within 50 km of one of nine Canadian cities (St John’s, Halifax, Quebec City, Kingston, Toronto, Hamilton, Saskatoon, Calgary and Vancouver), referred to as centres, encompassing roughly 40% of the Canadian population. Households were randomly selected from residential phone numbers; participants were then selected from households by an age-stratified protocol. In the adult cohort (ages 25 years and older), this protocol weighted to older adults with two thirds women.
