The population consists of men and women aged 55 years or more living in the city of Zaragoza, Spain.

There were three phases through which information was collected.

In the first phase, the ZARADEMP interview was used with its incorporated physical examination.

The ZARADEMP interview incorporated several international instruments previously standardized in Spain (History and Aetiology Schedule (HAS), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), Risk Factor Questionnaire Mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Geriatric Mental State (GMS), Automated Geriatric Examination for Computer Assisted Taxonomy (AGECAT),) and a section on physical examination.

Blood pressure, height and weight of each individual were also checked and recorded.

Medical reports were used in some cases to help in the diagnostic process.

In the second phase, the data on each elderly were thoroughly reviewed by the research psychiatrists supervising individually the lay interviewers. The psychiatrists recorded a diagnosis of “dementia”, “depression” or “others” in the nominated “cases”.

In the third phase, or hospital phase the diagnosis of dementia, and type of dementia, were confirmed. For the diagnosis of dementia, a neurological, dementia protocol used in previous studies of the group was completed in all cases referred.
