The population was composed of inhabitants in a selected part of the city of Gälve in Sweden, who were aged 25 years or older (born before 1944).

Questionnaires collected information on medical history, use of health services, diseases and smoking habits. The participants did also undergo a detailed medical examination covering height and weight, blood pressure, physical measures including screening of the lungs and heart analysis. Blood samples were collected. Information about marital status, diseases, care event, life status and cause of death was compiled from governmental databases.
