WHIMS - Baseline
The WHIMS measurement protocol had 4 ordered phases. Completion of phases 2 and 3 were done within 3 months of phase 1.
Phase 1: The Modified Mini-Mental Exam (3MS) was administered. Participants scoring 72 or less proceeded to phases 2 and 3.
Phase 2: Portions of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) neuropsychological test battery (verbal fluency, naming, constructional praxis and praxis recall, word-list memory, recall and recognition), the Trail Making Test (visual, conceptual and visuomotor functions tests), the Structured Psychiatric Interview (depression, anxiety, panic and alcohol abuse disorders), the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (nonsomatic depressive symptoms), the Acquired Cognitive and Behavior Changes (ACBC) (impairments of memory, language, personality, behavior, orientation, activities of daily living, social functioning and judgment problem-solving) and Friend/Family Member Interview (same as ACBC but for third parties) were performed.
Phase 3: A physician conducted a face-to-face semistructured neurologic evaluation that included: a review of past medical history, a clinical evaluation, a Mini-Mental State Exam, an evaluation for the presence of clinically significant depression, anxiety, panic or alcohol abuse or dependence and a checklist of clinical signs and symptoms used to distinguish progressive dementia from vascular dementia.
Phase 4: Each women judged to have probable dementia in phase 3 underwent a series of laboratory tests to classify the type of dementia, which included blood analyses and noncontrast CT scan.
In addition to the 4 phases, various data were collected at baseline: demographic information, socioeconomic status, physical measurements, hysterectomy status, prior use of hormones, current use of medication, menstrual history, medical history, familial history, psychological information, physical activity and personal habits.
